HISTORY HOUSE OF CULTURE, PUERTO PLATA

Casa de la Cultura, Puerto Plata

Continuing with the series of images of our city, going to the Puerto Plata of yesterday, that of our ancestors, the cultured Puerto Plata and seeing the Puerto Plata of today, its evolution and its attachment to traditions, we thus find ourselves with today's Casa of Culture before the Society Faith in the Future built entirely in wood in 1908, where at the time of the dictatorship of Ulises Heureaux "Lilís" a part of the restless Puerto Plata youth met in front of the Central Park, between the now Separación and Duarte streets , to discuss politics and science, despite the existing repressive measures. From that gathering, emerged, on May 12, 1889, the society Fe en el Porvenir.

The Faith in the Future Society played a very important role in the development of culture and many of its members participated in the fight against the dictatorship of Ulises Heureaux, whose fall occurred on July 26, 1889. During his history, this institution managed to develop in Puerto Plata, a spirit of sociability and cultural dissemination through evening presentations and literary gatherings.

The educator José Dubeau was one of the main animators of the meetings that were held there. The evenings were organized by the educator Antera Mota, both at her school and at the Faith in the Future Society. On October 12, 1896, the Faith in the Future Society invited Salomé Ureña to participate in the celebration of the fourth centenary of the Discovery of America, which she attended and read in the halls of said society, her poem La Fe en el Future. Her children Pedro and Max Henríquez Ureña accompanied her in this act, it was her last appearance in public.

The current House of Culture is located on Separación Street, in front of Plaza Independencia, the three-level building richly adorned with turned columns and railings, skylights and cresting: but what most often draws attention to it is the sloping ceiling “Manzard” type that takes place on the third level, a place currently occupied by the provincial headquarters of the Secretary of State for Culture and the Offices of the Provincial Directorate of Monumental Heritage. Where the culture of our city continues to be transmitted and supported.
