Archaeological National Park
Overview
ARCHAEOLOGICAL NACIONAL PARK, PUERTO PLATA
La Isabela the first city founded by Europeans in the Americas are located here.
Also here are the remains of the very first church, inaugurated on January 5, 1494 and the La Isabela Museum, created in 1992, where pieces such as tiles and bricks built by the original Spanish settles have been recovered and are exhibited.
The first settler of this town was, neither more nor less Christopher Columbus himself, who on his second trip to the Americas in 1494 settled here along with 1,500 other inhabitants. But due to the scourge of strong hurricanes in those early years, as early as 1500 the small town was abandoned. It was not until several centuries later, as early as the 20th century, when this town was rediscovered and acquired the great archaeological value that it now possesses.
Inside the park you can visit the Archaeological Museum La Isabela and thus get to know its first constructions, such as the first cemetery, where some of those who lived there still rest, or the house of Admiral Colón himself; and, on the other hand, the way of life of those first European settlers, in the interpretation center that is installed there.
La Isabella National Historical and Archaeological Park is located in the north of the Dominican Republic about 40 miles west of Puerto Plata, in the municipality of Luperon.
