The city of Puerto Plata was first discovered by Christopher Columbus in one of the famous explorer’s trips to the Americas in the 1490s. The town, designed by Columbus, was the first settlement established in the Americas, naming it La Isabela. In 1540, the first fort in the New World was built, Fuerte de San Felipe, and the port became a stop for traders between Europe and this area.  To date, San Felipe Fort is one of the oldest military colonial period fortresses in the region.

Large cruise port - pool and pool area is very clean and very nice. Free chairs, umbrella's are $20 for the day. Drinks and food options with super great wait staff. We got a chair early and right on the pools edge - it was great. You can walk back and forth to the ship if you wanted to go back and have lunch - bikes can bring you back and forth if you wanted. Just a really nice and clean place to spend the day.

The cruise terminal in Amber Cove is clean and very modern. It is surrounded by a tall fence with barbed wire, and security is good. A very safe place to get in your tourist shopping.
