Damajaqua Waterfalls, Puerto Plata

The Twenty Seven waterfalls have existed for millennia but were only recently discovered by the outside world. The first tourists began arriving at the Falls in 1994, and little by little, word got out about this amazing natural treasure and spawned a guiding industry for the local young men. Ten years later, nearly 50,000 tourists every year come to Rio Damajagua to enjoy what Dominicans have known about for centuries.

Damajaqua Waterfalls, Puerto Plata

The vast majority of tourists who visit 27 Charcos do so as part of prepaid guided excursions from professional guide companies in Puerto Plata or Cabarete. These groups arrive at 27 Charcos and climb up with a tour guide to the 7th Waterfall before returning back down, about 2- 3 hours round trip. This is a fantastic way of visiting 27 Charcos if you are unfamiliar with the area. The only drawback is that these groups only go up one quarter of all the Falls; 21 remain, untouched in the winding Damajagua above. Because of the length of the trip to the top, 4- 5 hours in a group of about 5- 7, tourists wishing to go all the way up must come on their own, either through rental car, taxi or public transportation. These private tours are catered to the tourists wishes and can be extended or turned around whenever you want.

I was able to go early and experience the falls before everyone else. My guide was awesome and gave me a history of the falls and the country. I had a great time

Edwin was the best tour guide EVER. He was extremely personable and knowledgeable about Puerto Plata, the waterfalls, as well as the Dominican Republic itself. He was great, highly recommend!

My husband and I LOVED this tour. Our tour guides Bernie and Omega were the best. So helpful & funny. They even kept my phone and took pics/videos the whole time for our group! It was beautiful & so fun. Definitely an adrenaline rush jumping off rocks and sliding down them.

  • Paul_B

After a 35 minute uphill hike we jumped from 25’ into a cool pool of water surrounded by rocks. We then slid, jumped, walked and swam down 11 more falls. Charly and Omega were awesome guides. Edwin was our taxi driver/ tour guide and he was great as well. This was one of the best excursions ever.

Edwin was our driver from the hotel to the waterfalls. I would trust him with my life. He made sure we were safe and had fun. He even brought a cooler of drinks for us to enjoy during our lunch. The waterfall was nice too! We did 12 waterfalls which was a 30 minute moderate hike up to start. Some of the waterfalls were high but after the first couple waterfalls, you won’t be scared anymore. All in all, a good experience and will do again.

Great adventure! Very unique experience! Falls were beautiful and water refreshing! Guides were extremely attentive and made sure everyone was safe and comfortable. Hike up to falls was arduous but beautiful. The plunge into the first pool was refreshing. Excellent all-around adventure!
