How to Get From Santiago to Puerto Plata: Travel Guide and Routes

Crossing the Mountains to the Coast

If you are flying into the Cibao International Airport in Santiago (STI), you’ll need to know how to get from Santiago to Puerto Plata. Luckily, this is one of the most scenic and straightforward routes in the country, taking you directly through the lush Cordillera Septentrional mountain range.

The drive is approximately 70 kilometers and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. If you want a cheap and comfortable option, hop on a Caribe Tours or Metro bus. These large, air-conditioned coaches run regularly between the two cities and cost less than $10. The ride is smooth, and you’ll get to enjoy breathtaking views of the winding mountain roads.

If you prefer convenience, booking a private taxi at the airport is highly recommended. It will cost around $80-$100, but it will drop you off right at your resort’s lobby. For the adventurous, renting a car is a great option. The Navarrete-Puerto Plata highway has been recently renovated and is a beautiful drive. Just take it slow around the mountain curves, and get ready to smell the ocean air as you descend into the city!
