Unlike other cities, Puerto Plata has its own unique carnival character: the Taimáscaro. This character’s costume is a beautiful blend of Taino indigenous elements, Spanish colonial influences, and African roots. Every Sunday in February, the Malecón transforms into a massive parade route filled with elaborately costumed groups, booming music trucks, and dancing crowds.
You’ll hear the crack of the "vejigas" (whips) and the endless rhythm of merengue and bachata. The energy is absolutely infectious!
